Using google here is an explaination on why the watermelon had a white foamy discharge:
Wild yeast has gotten into the watermelon and it is fermenting. When yeast goes to work it replicates itself, usually in a kind of gooey brown way that solidifies easily. That would close the entry point of the yeast while it ferments the rest of the fruit. Eventually the pressure cracks the melon (the same method is used in bottle conditioned beer) and the foam comes out. Easiest way to see if it is safe to consume is to smell the fruit. If it smells soured it could have lactobacilus or acetobacter in it. One makes it taste like sour milk, the other like vinegar. If it smells like a fresh turd, it is probably encephalobacter (not sure on proper spelling of that one) and obviously shouldn’t be consumed. If it smells like a sweaty horse blanket then it probably had an introduction of brettanomyces. If it smells like a less sweet watermelon, you have low alcohol watermelon wine.
